Teaching Philosophy

A little about me:
I graduated with my BA in English and Secondary Education from St. Joseph’s College on Long Island, New York. I have a New York State as well as professional Florida State certificate to teach English grades six through twelve. Currently, I teach the Special Education students of Palm Beach County. All of those students who cannot attend regular school for physical and psychological reasons, as well as those who can't be in school because of behavioral issues. I get 'em all!!
Although I have taught secondary education for some of my teaching career, the last eight years I have taught Freshman Composition and Writing (1101 and 1102) on the college level. I teach at many colleges in South Florida, and I have taught online course for the last three years.
Academically speaking: I completed the Multicultural Literature track of the English Master’s program at Florida Atlantic University.   Currently, I am enrolled in the Composition and Applied Linguistics PhD program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I attend during the Summer which is fun because I get to act like a student; my son and dog are shipped off to Nana's house; I rent a tiny apartment and order Jimmy John's while reveling in theory and writing (Yes, I am a nerd). :)
My teaching philosophy views all learners as capable when the information is presented in a harmonious and upbeat atmosphere. I strive to establish a friendly, if firm, rapport with the students in order to facilitate learning.  If a student does not feel comfortable with the instructor or feels as if the instructor is in any way unavailable, the student will not approach the teacher with questions and concerns. This lack of trust and common understanding hinders student learning. By maintaining an open, upbeat, and helpful personality within the classroom, I am able to present myself as an instructor to whom the students can bring any question.
